Just starting out? Check these out

Hey everyone and hope you’ve been having a great week!

I was thinking to myself the other day how grateful I was to have stumbled upon some pretty fantastic resources when I first became interested in the mysterious world that is veganism. On the surface, it seemed like the adjustment would be somewhat of an easy one – just don’t consume meat or dairy I thought, easy enough! That and I had a few friends that were vegan who continued to be alive every time I checked in with them… so this wasn’t looking like too scary of an undertaking.

In hindsight, I probably could have done a little more research before jumping right in, though.

Growing up, my mom cooked 90% of all the meals (I just changed that from 95% in case my dad is reading – p.s. thanks for the pizza nights, dad!). Her meals were delicious and prepared with the Canada Food Guide in mind – which meant that there was always meat on the plate, greens and starch. Mom did a fantastic job putting in effort to make meals for us based off what was thought at the time to be the healthiest grouping of foods. This is how I grew up, this is what I knew.

So when I went vegan – it was a bit of a scramble to figure out how I should be feeding myself. I knew enough to know that I wouldn’t just be limited to salads and muesli. I knew that it was possible to obtain all the nutrients I’d need from plants. I had heard of this world where vegan food options were abundant and vegans thrived. I just apparently needed to do a little homework before it all became easy.

I am still just starting out – I learn something new every day whether that’s a recipe or even just about where to find the best vegan chocolate (Pure Lovin on Pandora is the answer!). But having the following books and social media personalities to follow has helped SO much and I would love to share if it means that it will help another newbie Vegan out!

Eating on the Wild Side (The Missing Link to Optimum Health) – Jo Robinson

Forks Over Knives

*= James Aspey is the most well-spoken/kind vegan activist out there that I know of. It was his video and speech “The Truth About Dairy” (this speech was recorded in Victoria!) that really drove home all the feelings that I had about the dairy industry. After watching his videos and hearing his personal story, I went vegan. I had tried it as more of a “diet” before in the past – but James’s way of speaking helped me realize that there are SO many reasons to make the switch. I consider him to be one of the most, if not the most influential vegans of our time.

Hope this is helpful! Leave some comments below letting me know your favourite resources.
