Some like it raw: Vegan Hippie-Chick Cafe (1034 Fort Street)

About a month ago I was lamenting to a friend over how few places we have in Victoria that are FULL vegan. If there ever was a first world problem haha… I had certainly found one! I could only think of one place within the city that was full-on vegan, and not just somewhere with vegan options.

“Have you heard of Vegan Hippie-Chick Cafe?”,  he asked. I hadn’t, and laughed a little over how cute the name was. In my life, I’m still trying to figure out what percentage Hippie I am – I love hummus, but I shave my legs. I’m a tree-hugger, but I don’t particularly love the smell of patchouli. I AM a vegan chick though, so two out of three isn’t bad!

First impressions of the place is that it’s a funky one with a pop-culture, comic book type feel to it. Bright pink walls and pink accents throughout – even pink himalayan salt shakers on the tables. It’s a smaller place, but still a few spots to sit!

A woman named Karen Rousseau is the owner – after reading up a little about her and why she started up the restaurant, it’s easy to see that a lot of love goes into her cafe. Her switch to going vegan happened six years ago when she decided it was the best route to what could help her live a long, healthy and happy life.

Drinks and to-go snacks!

One thing that was really attractive about the place was that not only are they exclusively vegan – everything made is 100% plant-based and from raw ingredients. This was pretty evident when I was biting into my Bacun LT – The flatbread is made in-house and a totally different experience if you’re like me and not used to eating sandwiches with flatbread. Even though it was a little harder to eat as it broke in a couple of places, it was so flavourful!!

Really enjoyed everything that I tried including their Green Peace Smoothie (greens, mango, banana, spirulina, hemp hearts and orange juice), but my favourite was their ‘Hang Loose’ coconut curry stew! Beautiful flavour from all the veggies in it and possibly the best coconut curry stew I’ve ever had! Also, those PICKLES. They sure know how to make a tasty pickle.

My friend had the ‘Trippy Taco’ salad bowl that has walnut “meat” on top, garnished with a couple of pieces of their flatbread and nacho cheeze dressing. I tried a bit and we both especially liked the seasoning on the walnuts.

Before we left, my friend got a bag of the onion rings and slice of the ‘flashback salted caramel’ squares. I didn’t get anything to go but deeply regretted it once I got home and was thinking back to all the delicious looking things that they had!

I’ve got to say that I was really impressed with the Vegan Hippie-Chick Cafe. Even now I’m sitting here and thinking that I need to go back and try their pizza, their cheezecake… all of it. I really enjoyed it overall and think that there really is something to eating not only vegan, but raw. OH and they’re gluten-free as well. I didn’t feel overly full when I left, even though I did eat quite a bit! I just felt great 🙂

Would definitely recommend the Vegan Hippie-Chick Cafe to anyone as you can guarantee that you’re in for a healthy and delicious meal!
